Monday 11 July Southport Golf Club played host to its annual Southport Pro-Am, and what a result we had on the day!
With all the rain experienced in the weeks leading up to the event, it’s a miracle that Stuart Moore and his team managed to get the course into such great condition on the day. Kudos to the whole team.
As you all know we have commenced a journey toward our centenary year in 2024 and beyond. This year’s Pro-Am was such an important ‘proof of concept’ opportunity allowing us to determine what worked, what aspects have potential for improvement and growth, and what new ideas or strategies might emerge and be developed for the future.
Importantly this year we have attempted to establish a new framework for our relationship with sponsors where we undertake to work with them to add value to their business relationships and objectives.
Our sponsors went above and beyond to create innovative interaction with players and guests on the day. Some of the highlights were:
- Live coverage of the 12th Hole where a Hole in one prize of $1,000 was up for grabs, which was generously sponsored by Pickering Luxury Garage. Replay of the streams can be viewed https://fb.watch/ee1wD7a1O2/ & https://fb.watch/ee1vkpA8cO/
- Nearest to the pin on the driving range – open to players and visitors on the day – prize sponsored by Golf24 & Balter Brewery.
- Chipping Competition on the driving range – Sponsored by Aquis Park
- You could taste test Balter beer on the 7th tee – Sponsored by Balter
- Marriott Hotel had a competition that could be entered by visiting the 4th
- Free Merlot Coffee was provided by Daisy Days Coffee Van – sponsored by BetGold
- An Ice-Cream Van was serving Ice-Cream next to the 7th Tee for most of the day.
- Sotheby’s International Realty had a competition that could be entered by visiting the 1th
- Kieser had an interactive grip-strength test on the 10th.
- Mortimore and Associates held a Marshmallow driving contest on their sponsored tee.
Winners
Congratulations to Kade McBride and Josh Armstrong who shared victory on the day.
The fresh morning conditions made scoring challenging for the 7am shotgun groups, whereas the afternoon groups were the beneficiaries of ideal weather.
Four birdies in his final six holes ensured Kade McBride’s share of the victory.
With his prodigious length Armstrong manhandled the tight Southport layout with an eagle at the par-5 Fifth and a second at the 306-meter par-4 Tenth.
“The course was awesome. The greens rolled great – sometimes too good – but I managed to hole the ones coming back and keep the momentum going.” said McBride, who was two-under through his first 12 holes.
“It was the first time playing here which I think sort of helped,” Armstrong reasoned.
“Not knowing the course at all with a little bit of guidance from the playing partners led me to playing aggressively. I’m really looking forward to coming back next year to try and defend,” he added.
